Fiesta de las Luminarias, Starting December 1st each year and continuing for three pre-holiday weeks. Experience the Holiday serenity of the River Walk as you stroll along the lush banks of the San Antonio River guided by more than 6,000 luminarias. Warmly glowing candles in sand filled bags line the walkways to symbolically mark the "lighting of the way" for Holy Family. This centuries’ old tradition begins at dusk Friday, Saturday & Sunday only.
Holiday Arts & Crafts Show, usually the second weekend in December. A perfect setting for unique holiday shopping-the banks of the San Antonio River Walk. Local and regional artists, craftsmen, and jewelers offer holiday gift items for that special someone. Located along the River Walk Extension near the Chamber of Commerce, this Arts & Crafts Show displays some of the most unique hand made merchandise available anywhere. Whether it's jewelry, pottery or fine art you are interested in, you can finalize your holiday shopping. Holiday Boat Caroling, starting Thanksgiving weekend and continuing each weekend in Dec, 6:30 pm - 9:45 pm daily. Joyous caroling fills the evening air along the San Antonio River Walk as more than 185 school, church, company, and civic choral groups ring in the holidays by singing traditional carols on cruising boats. The eclectic mix of participants includes bell choirs, folk groups, Latino ensembles, and hearing impaired performers. Join visitors from around the world in impromptu sing-a-longs from the patios of River Walk restaurants. Starts at river level by Chamber of Commerce.

Las Nuevas Tamaleras, Various dates in Dec. www.tamaleras.com. Written and directed by San Antonio playwright, Alicia Mena, this is a one act bilingual comedy that captures three contemporary Chicanas in an uproariously comical attempt at making Tamales for the first time. The show erupts when the spirits of Doña Juanita and Doña Mercedes appear on the scene to invisibly guide the younger generation of women. The situation becomes even more outrageous and entertaining when the experienced Tamaleras disagree on the proper way to make the perfect tamal. The new Tamaleras blunder through the daunting task, frustrating their spiritual guides and delighting the audience. Bazaar Sabado, usually 2nd Sat in Dec. www.samuseum.org. SAMA's most popular fundraiser of the year, it is an eclectic global shopping experience and a great way to buy unique gifts. Special shopping trips to Mexico, Central and South America and Asia have stocked the shelves with unique treasures from around the world in a variety of prices to accommodate all your gift-giving needs. Items include unusual African tribal pieces, handbags, fashions and ethnic jewelry from Southeast Asia, Cuna Indian blouses with molas, ceremonial rattles and carved gourd bowls from Panama. Of course, Bazar Sábado favorites from Mexico, Guatemala and Peru such as jewelry and accessories, holiday items, ceramics, textiles, house wares and rugs will be featured in abundance. La Gran Posada, TBA each December 6pm (annual), at San Fernando Cathedral. The oldest cathedral sanctuary in the United States, San Fernando Cathedral hosts an annual re-enactment of Mary and Joseph's search for a manger prior to the birth of baby Jesus. La Gran Posada has been reenacted every year since the 16th century, and has followed the same processional route beginning in Milam Park, the parade works its way through Market Square, City Hall and past the Courthouse, ending up at the cathedral itself. Marchers hold candles and follow Mary and Joseph as they search for shelter, singing traditional Posada songs and Christmas carols as they go. Local musicians perform in the church after the procession and prayer is complete; truly an otherworldly experience! Free to all.
Art.i.copia, Southwest School of Art & Craft, often the 2nd weekend in Dec: Enjoy refreshments while browsing an array of contemporary art in the SSAC’s Gallery Shop on Navarro Campus.
