Cinco de Mayo, centered around the date of May 5th, this event stretches to fill a weekend. Cinco de Mayo events at San Antonio's historic Market Square usually draw about 30,000 to 50,000 visitors. Festivities include Mariachis, Tejano and Conjunto music groups, Folklorico dancers, arts & crafts, concerts and lots of great food. Call (210) 207-8601 for more information.

Valero Texas Open Golf Tournament, held in April or May, The 3rd oldest golf tournament on the PGA Tour, originated and played in San Antonio since 1922.

Tejano Conjunto Festival, May 2012, usually held Mother’s Day weekend at Rosedale Park. In the late 1800’s the Mexicans in south Texas adopted the lively button accordion from German settlers and combined it with the Spanish guitar, or bajo sexto (a 12-string bass guitar), to develop a new style of music known as Conjunto. By synthesizing European rhythms, such as polkas, waltzes and schottisches, with indigenous Mexican musical forms, a highly stylized and unique expression of American music was born. Soul Food Festival & 2nd Annual Gospel on the Plaza Competition, May 15 – 16 2012. This event kicks off with a gospel choir competition and continues with amazing soul food, arts, crafts, family events, and more. .

Return of the Chili Queens, May 23rd – 25th 2012 11am – 11pm Fri & Sat, 11am – 8pm Sun at El Mercado.  Celebrating a long-gone time when tables crowded San Antonio’s plazas while vendors, “the Chili Queens”, cooked spicy Mexican chilies all night long charming cowboys and visitors alike.
